The video game titan Capcom recently released an official iPhone app called “Capcom Arcade.” The arcade-styled app lets you play the original versions of some of Capcom’s classic games. Street Fighter, Ghouls ‘N Ghosts, 1942, and Commando are all available to be played in their entirety on iOS.
“Wow. That’s a lot of awesome gameplay in one app. I bet that’s expensive.” That’s what I thought too when I first heard that Capcom was releasing an app with bundled games. The interesting thing is that Capcom Arcade is not an expensive app at all, in fact, it’s free…

Capcom’s app takes a very intriguing approach to monetization. It uses the “freemium” model of distribution. Urbandictionary defines “freemium” as, “A game or program that is available for free but offers extra premium features for money.” Examples of this model can be seen in very successful companies like Ngmoco and Zynga. In-app purchases have been proven to be very profitable, especially in social games like We Rule and FarmVille.
Unfortunately, not many arcade-style games have utilized the freemium model. Capcom Arcade technically offers gameplay for free, but also uses the credit system of the physical arcades of old. You are given credits for three free games a day, but if you want to play more games, you have to buy more credits. Not only does this approach work at getting users hooked on the games, but it also harkens to the nostalgia associated with when these games were first played.

Each game is given its own retro arcade cabinet. You use your virtual credits to play a new game whenever you get a game over. You can purchase 10 more credits for $0.99, or have unlimited gameplay for $3. There’s a ton of extra bundles to buy, as well as a cheats packages that unlocks upgrades and special abilities.
You can play the games in an optimized ‘iPhone mode,” or “Classic mode” for purists. Gameplay is pretty nice, that is, if you can work well with a virtual joystick. I sometimes have trouble doing complicated moves with so little space for my finger to move.
Capcom has said that new games will be added to the arcade every month. This app is quite the steal for some leisurely, retro gaming. If you plan on being an addict, prepare to fork over some bones. But for most of us, three games a day is plenty to entertain and warrant the free download.
Capcom Arcade does not currently support Apple’s Game Center, but that will hopefully be fixed in an update. At a whopping 166 MB, I would recommend downloading the app on your desktop and then syncing it to your iPhone.

Last week we reported about a bug found in iOS 4.1 that was first revealed by fellow Australian and European iPhone users. The glitch, which happens during Daylight Saving Time (tonight for us in the US), causes your alarm clock to go off an hour late. That’s because your iPhone alarm clock doesn’t recognize the time change.
Apple is well aware of it, and to be honest with you, I expected them to release iOS 4.2 in time to fix this bug, but this apparently wasn’t a priority for them. They did however provide a few steps to make sure your iPhone will wake you up on time if you have an alarm clock set…
As we previously noted:

The bug appears when using a repeating alarm for anything other than “every day.” So for example, your alarm will go off an hour late if it’s set for “weekdays,” or “weekends,” or every “Monday.” The following alarms are not affected by the bug:

• An alarm that doesn’t repeat (repeat set to “never”)
• An alarm set to repeat “every day”

In short, you should delete all your alarms, and make sure to set alarms for specific days. Or simply use an old school, real alarm clock!
Strange bug, but again, even stranger is the fact that Apple didn’t fix it on time.

Google Instant has been bringing lighting fast search results to the desktop for a couple of months. Dynamic results are shown as you type your search query. Basically, Google guesses what you’re typing as you type it.
This amazing technology has been duplicated with other famous search services like App Store Instant. We’ve all been waiting in eager expectation for Google to bring instant searching to iOS, and Google Instant has now been made available on all iOS 4.0+ devices…

Reports have been that some areas in the U.S. do not have Google Instant yet. The service should start rolling out internationally in the coming weeks. I personally got the option for Instant search almost right away.
It appears that the Instant option is only available on the mobile Google website. The official Google Mobile app will most likely be updated with Instant support soon.
I also noticed that Google felt the need to clarity that Instant was in “beta.” O Google, when will you realize that your whole company is basically in beta.

Slice it! , created by Com2uS, is a game that initially stirred up my attention by the iTunes App Store ratings. The current version has 106 ratings at 5 stars with 9045 ratings at 4.5 stars. Those are some pretty impressive stats aren’t they?
I can’t remember the last time I saw an app with ratings this high and would love some recommendations of other games with these kinds of ratings!
Anyways, Slice it! is a puzzle game that puts your Geometry skills to the test. I must admit, in High school I hated Geometry and barely did enough to get by, but don’t worry! You won’t be doing any Pi x Radius calculations but you will find yourself planning ahead and visualizing your strategy to achieve the most amount of stars possible…
The goal of the game is to slice different shapes into the required number of pieces noted at the top of the screen. Each shape needs to be as equal in size as possible. However, if there are huge differences between your resulting shapes, then you find yourself back at square one and repeating the level.
After successfully cutting the pieces, you are rewarded between 1-5 stars depending on accuracy of your cut pieces. If you are able to achieve 5 stars you are given a hint. These hints are given as points and can be saved for later on in the game when you are stuck.
The graphics and music go perfectly with this game. Game play is extremely easy to learn as all you’re doing is using your finger to cut slices. When cutting, a dotted line represents your cut and with the paper background it helps with precision. However, if you’re not happy with what you cut you can always redo it with the undo button.
There are 60 levels, which was more than enough for me. As you progress in the game, you are presented with tricky and strange shapes and also areas where you will not be able to cut. Unless you’re a genius, these later levels will really make you frustrated and will require you to re-do it many times in order to figure out how to pass the level.
After I used all of my hints and failed multiple times, I just gave up. For those who love puzzle games this will definitely rack your brain and provide you with hours of fun. For those of you who aren’t die-hard puzzle fans than I suggest staying away.

DirectControl Gives You Quick and Dirty Access to Your iPod Controls

If you know me well at all, you know how much I love the jailbreak app SwitcherPlus. My infatuation with that app is well documented. The reason I like it so much is because it adds real value and benefit to the iPhone experience by making the task switcher more usable and intuitive.
Well, DirectControl is a lot like SwitcherPlus, that is, if SwitcherPlus went on a crash diet and lost like 100 pounds. In other words, it takes one feature that SwitcherPlus does well, and offers it to you in a single tweak. Does that make DirectControl any more or less compelling?

I suppose if all you care about is accessing your iPod controls, then you could make an argument for DirectControl. But SwitcherPlus is a full fledged app that offers end users a much more comprehensive feature set, and all of said features are useful. Plus, just like the tweak in question, it also includes options to open directly to iPod controls.
It’s just hard for me to recommend DirectControl when SwitcherPlus does iPod controls along with a flashlight, favorites, and options for lock screen behavior. It’s not too bloated, and it’s not too minimal, it’s just the right size for an app of its type. For this reason, I recommend SwitcherPlus over DirectControl.
Both apps are available on the Cydia store for jailbroken iPhones running iOS 4+. Which one do you recommend?

CoBrowser Allows You to Share a Webpage From Your iPhone to Another iDevice

Ever wanted to share a webpage from your iPhone to another iDevice or to a friend’s iPad who is sitting in the same room? Now you can with CoBrowser by Collect3.
CoBrowser allows your iPhone to download an entire webpage images and all to your iPhone and then share it via Bluetooth to any other iDevice such as an iPod Touch or iPad. The nice thing is the other devices don’t even need to have an internet connection because they pull it from your iPhone directly.

CoBrowser can be especially handy at meetings when you need to share a webpage with multiple iDevices for viewing or collaborating on ideas or data. Repurpose an Unused iDevice as a Media Server

Don’t feel like shelling out the money for an iTV? Well if you have an old iDevice laying around, you don’t have to! Introducing iPod Remote Controller and iPod Remote Server.
The iPod Remote Controller app is a two-trick app for jailbroken devices. It will access and control any iDevice that is running the iPod Remote Server. You can select songs, shuffle, and play the songs in an interface that closely resembles the iPod app for the iPhone. It will also allow you to connect via WiFi or Bluetooth for those who don’t have a WiFi connection…
The iPod Remote Server is a free system-level app that installs as a preference pane. You can toggle it on or off and set a password.
The most striking feature of this app is the ability to act as a Veency VNC client for an iPhone that’s running the Veency server. For this alone, the $1 price is worth it to me! So if you’re using DisplayOut or TVOut2-Mirror you can connect the iDevice media server to your TV or home theater and control everything from your iPhone.
The only limitation I’ve found is all (or most?) album art does not show over Bluetooth, but I have not tested it over WiFi yet.

Facebook iPhone App Updated, Brings Groups and Deals

Facebook held a special mobile event yesterday at their headquarters in Palo Alto, California. CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, addressed the company’s new mobile strategy. Among some updates to the Android app, the official iPhone app was given the most attention.
Facebook v3.3 adds a couple of interesting features. The look of the app has been slightly restructured in the News Feed to consolidate space. Beyond the small updates to the user interface, Facebook added two major features: Groups and Deals…

Facebook Groups can now be accessed from an icon in the app’s home screen like all of the other popular features of the site. TechCrunch described Facebook Groups best, “Facebook Groups is sort of like Google Wave for human beings.” You can share posts with members of the group on the updated iPhone app, but you do not have administrative functions for managing a group.
I like Facebook Groups, it accomplishes its goal well and it makes exclusive, collaborative communicating easy. But let’s be honest, adding Groups to an iPhone app is not really newsworthy by itself. Facebook also added something that I think has the potential to change the face of mobile marketing- Deals.

The most interesting aspect of Facebook’s new mobile strategy is the update they made to Places. A service called “Deals” is being added to the already dominant check-in service. From the mouth of Zuckerberg himself, Deals is simply a way to “discover great deals around you.” But I have a feeling that it’s going to be much more than that.
Deals is basically Facebook’s version of Foursquare’s “Specials.” Deals allows merchants of all kinds to offer special deals and coupons to customers who check-in with Facebook Places. Like the initial launch of Places, Deals will be slowly rolled out in the U.S. first.
Although Zuckerberg didn’t really elaborate on how the monetization of Deals would work, I’m sure this new feature will be a cash cow for the king of social media. Deals can basically be translated to location-based advertising on steroids. However, the advertising looks to not be that intrusive for the end-user. Facebook users will simply see locations with a deal to offer highlighted in yellow. When you click on the location, you see a simple, text-only coupon to present to the cashier.
Facebook announced at their mobile event that Places has already become the most used location check-in service. With the 200 million users that are using Facebook on their mobile devices, the clout that Facebook carries in its brand will definitely carry over to the location-based advertising market. In Facebook’s official blog post on Deals, the social titan lists some major companies that have already committed to advertising deals in the upcoming weeks. The list is pretty impressive. I know I will be using several of those coupons when they are made available.
Needless to say, I think that Deals will be… a big deal. Pardon the pun.
